William Shakespeare
Sonnet 18
1)Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Note: “Thee” refers to the beauty and permanence of poetry.
2) Every fair from fair sometimes declines. But the eternal summer shall not fade.
Note: Nice summer days are usually transient, but the beauty in poetry can last forever.
3)So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, so long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Note: Shakespeare has a faith in the permanence of poetry.
